Ron Hatfield: When we started here we brought American building standards with us—central air conditioning, better electrical wiring and plumbing systems—so our homes took the character of the best homes in the United States. The designs are Mexican but the look is very Monterrey and Santa Barbara. The homes are similar to what you see in the States only with great Mexican influences and high-quality finishes.

ET: What are some of facilities and amenities that owners and renters can expect to enjoy at Villas Del Mar? Besides that we have the Sea of Cortez and three miles of private beach that our development is located on. We have a beautiful beach club, Club 96—for home owners only—we have an extensive fitness facility, a sailing catamaran, beach activities, a kids club, tennis courts and a concierge department that can provide a full entertainment schedule throughout the Baja area.

The fitness center alone is 10, square feet and we try to design everything to the standards of our homes. We have a beautiful lap pool. Club 96 also has a great chef and a staff of thirty people. We think our food compares with anything in Cabo San Lucas.

We get lots of complements on our food and I think it competes with the finest hotels in terms of quality and taste. ET: You have a former General Manager with a background at multiple five-star hotels.

Ron Hatfield: When we came down here we knew we were going to have to provide a high level of service in order to interest people in buying expensive resort homes in Mexico. Their father died in November at age The Normans told Schnitzer, their longtime friend, that they didn't want to buy a home in Mexico. Jim Norman, a retired advertising executive who is now 73, recalled telling him: "I don't go to Mexico anymore. But Schnitzer promised them there was no commitment, and he helped get them good deals on their trip.

Finally, on the third day in the Los Cabos area, the couple decided to keep their promise and visit Schnitzer's development. But all it took was for Gail Norman to see the waves crashing against the jetties and the white sand beach. The home the Normans would later buy was nothing more than concrete blocks at the time. But more than the beautiful views and the promise of a luxurious home on the beach, it was the golf course that sold the Normans.

Avid golfers, they decided to buy a home here because of the seven courses in the area, most of which offer a view of the sparkling blue Sea of Cortez. The Normans fell in love with the development so much that they ended up buying two homes in Villas Del Mar.

They rent out one home that's closer to the beach and live in the other three to four months a year, renting it out when they can. While they live there, they make an effort to contribute to the local economy by buying Mexican-made furniture and picking their own organically grown vegetables in a nearby community.

But before they purchased a home, the Normans hired international real estate attorneys to make sure their investment was safe.
